The art at the top of your Orangette blog is beautiful, but it obliterates (replaces) the ordinary blogger.com header that now includes a "search this blog" capability that I have found very useful. Perhaps you can figure out a way to include this feature in your header. It would make searching simpler.

Thank you for piping up, Jill! When I redesigned the banner, I intentionally removed the Blogger navigation bar that used to be at the top of the page. Having done all that work on my new fancy header, I selfishly didn't want the "nav bar" to interfere. But you'll be pleased to note that I have now added a Google search field in the sidebar of Orangette. That way, you can still search, but it's a little less obtrusive, appearance-wise. Hope that helps!

Nice update. Wow, is this something I have to add to my 'to do' list now...?

I did use your search bar to look for a cupcake recipe that used champagne, I think. Have I lost my mind or was there such a thing here? I believe it used edible flowers which was another thing that caught my eye.

Cheers,
Jacqueline Church

Hmmm, a cupcake that uses champagne? That sounds really intriguing, and I think I may have seen a similar recipe somewhere, but I have never written about one, myself. I don't think you've lost your mind, Jacqueline - the recipe is out there somewhere, just not here!

I love your blog! This is my first visit and I really love the way you write! You know, there is a way you can 'catalogue' your posts into categories. There is an element called "labels" that you can add to your blog. This is as close to categorising as you can get. Hope this helps!

I just read your article in bon appetit on jams, and was intrigued enough to check out your blog. Any chance you'll post a recipe for strawberry jam to complement the published mixed-berry jam?

3:51 PM, May 16, 2008
Blogger Molly said...

Thanks for stopping by, Tina. It's very easy to convert the mixed-berry jam recipe to use strawberries - or any summer fruit, really! Use 2 pounds strawberries (or blackberries, or plums, or apricots, or peaches, or...) instead of the mixed berries, and proceed as directed with 2 cups sugar and 2 tablespoons lemon juice.

hello
I don't really have a comment other than I love to read your blog....... may I ask if you know of a recipe for an eggnog cake? One I might serve with chocolate ganache? My task is the christmas eve dessert. The recipes I have found on line call for......one box of yellow cake mix... for starters. Nope.
My daughter and I just made the chewy molasses cookies from your recipe list today. Yum. We did not have fresh ginger but we used dry AND chopped candied ginger. Really good.

I know you're super busy with your new book, Bon Appetit job, podcast, etc, but was hoping you could answer a question for me (I'm a longtime lurker): was the index a shitton of work for you--i.e., did you pull the recipes one by one and link to them--or did you figure some way to tell blogger to pull the recipes/posts? If the answer is the latter but it is too complicated to explain, that's fine too, I just want to know if it is do-able before I start beating my head against the wall (for my own blog). Thanks so much and love the new(ish) header.

4:54 PM, February 18, 2010
Blogger Molly said...

Laura, I wish I could say otherwise, but yep, the index was a lot of work. I set it up as an entirely separate blog with the same basic template as Orangette, and then, yes, I pulled the recipes one by one and linked to them. Whenever I put up a new recipe, I have to add it manually to the index. (And typing this, I'm just realizing that I never added the recipe from my most recent post.) I do know, however, that Blogger has added categories, or tags, or something; maybe there's a way to use those to organize an index? Good luck!

Hi Molly,

I love reading your columns on bon apetit, which led me to your book, which led me to your recipes. I have my own food blog (it's about actually learning to cook), and I very much admire your writing style and ability to put nostalgia and food together.

I just wanted to tell you that when I read your book the recipe for bread and chocolate stood out to me. I was pretty skeptical, especially because it was so simple, yet not something I had ever thought about doing. But I wanted a snack and happened to have some french bread and a few chocolate chips lying around. IT IS THE BEST SNACK EVER. Thank you for putting that in your book! I will probably eat this for the rest of my life, thanks to you. Good luck with everything, and keep at it!

Hi Molly,

I found out about your blog from my boyfriend who made me your Far From Disaster Cake for my birthday. It was absolutely the best chocolate cake I ever had. Now his birthday is coming up, and I went straight to your blog to look for a recipe for his favorite dessert, cheesecake. I didn't see one, but was wondering if you could point me in the direction of any good recipes or any other blogs that have a good recipe for cheesecake. Let me know if you know of anything, and thanks for the absolutely beautiful blog. It is truly a work of art.

Where's the arugula salad with pistachios and chocolate? I know it's self-explanatory, but it's such an innovative idea! Salad is not normally part of my vocabulary either.

Elizabeth, I'm so sorry to have not replied sooner! Your comment came in while I was traveling for work, and I got sick shortly after I got home, and to make a long story short, I'm still catching up. My apologies! I've never made a true cheesecake, if you'll believe it, but if I were to make one, I think I'd look to see if Dorie Greenspan or David Lebovitz has a recipe. They're always right on the mark.

Julie, that recipe is in my book, and I haven't written about it here. That's why it's not in the blog recipe index. But glad you like it!

Hi Molly,

Thank you for your suggestions about where to look for a good cheesecake recipe, and no worries at all for the delay (as you can see, I, too, am delayed in thanking you...except I don't have a good excuse!). Three weeks till his birthday so there's still plenty of time. Thank you again and take care.

Elizabeth

P.S. Your most recent post was lovely.

I just wanted to share a quick story with you involving one of your recipes. My mother in law actually gave me "A Homemade Life" for the holidays. I am a pediatric resident from New York, but cooking has become my hobby, and frankly, my therapy! I am currently writing this post from Accra, Ghana where I have come to work for the next two ans half months. I am staying at a hostel on the hospital grounds...and I have no kitchen. To make a long story short, As wonderful as the Ghanaian food can be, the flavors are simply not ones that I am used to. I was reading your book, and stumbled across the "red cabbage with lemon and black pepper" recipe and though to myself "I can make that here!" I had to substitute a green cabbage for the red ( a red cabbage costs about 20.00 USD here), powdered spices and bottled lemon juice for fresh, and powdered Parmesan cheese for freshly grated... but I have to say the end result was still quite good. I cannot wait to try the original recipe when I get back to the states. So I just wanted to say thank you for providing me with a delicious antidote for my home sickness!

Hi Molly,
That is nice that you have a vegetarian section. Could you make a vegan too? I can help, for example, going through your vegetarian recipes and suggest vegan substitutions where and if it is possible. I have to do that all the time.
Love your writing!
